Brent residents urged to register to vote

THOUSANDS of Brent residents are still missing out on their right to vote by failing to register.

Dawn Butler MP is urging residents across Brent to ensure that they do not lose their right to vote by registering on the electoral register.

Brent has a relatively low level of voter registration and the Stonebridge area in particular where there will soon be a by-election has one of the lowest proportions of people registered to vote in Brent - with around 1 in 4 failing to register to vote.

Stonebridge ward also has a high BME proportion of 67% and nationally 37% Black Africans are not registered to vote compared with 6% of white people.

Anyone Brent resident who are 18 and over and who are a British, Commonwealth or Irish citizen can register to vote in all elections including general election. European Union citizens have the right to vote in local and European elections.

To register to vote you simply need to fill in a quick and easy form and return to Brent Council. Dawn Butler MP is urging Brent residents to register to vote by either downloading a form from Brent Council website (www.brent.gov.uk), ringing Brent Council on 020 8937 1372, or contacting Dawn Butler MP's Office on 020 7219 4385.

Dawn Butler MP said, "Democracy can't work properly when one in four Brent residents are denied their vote because they are not on the register. I am proud of our democracy and it's vital that everyone has their say, which is why I am encouraging Brent residents to register to vote.

"Unfortunately many people in Brent may not realise that they qualify to vote - for example if they are Commonwealth citizens they have the right to vote in all our elections and have their say on who runs the country and how vital local services are provided - such as schools and housing and how much they get taxed for these services."
