FOREST GATE enjoyed a bright blue start to the festive season when the area's community forum switched on its Christmas lights. More than 70 people headed to the Methodist Church Hall on Woodgrange Road for the illuminating event on Friday.
Executive member for community forums Councillor Richard Crawford switched on the blue lights, with help from Forest Gate community lead Councillor Kay Scoresby and Councillor Winston Vaughan.
Councillor Crawford said: "It was a delightful event and wonderful to involve young people in the celebrations. The lights look brilliant and will help to brighten Woodgrange Road for the coming weeks." |
Before the sky was lit up, the chilly evening air was filled with the beautiful sound of carols sung by Godwin Junior School Choir.
Ten-year-old Akeem Steer made his first public performance and said: "It was great - everyone was staring and we were singing clear and loud.
The best bit was singing We wish you a Merry Christmas."
Resident Caroline Couzens attended the event with several friends and their pre-school children. She said: "We thought it would be nice to stay in the High Street and support Godwin School and see the lights go on. It's good to support community activities."
Sponsors of the Christmas lights include Local Space Ltd, East Thames Group, Wayfare, Wilkinson Estate Agents, Newbury Radio, Mansons Pharmacy, Promotions II, Sola Satellites, Somerfield, Go For It Grants and 99p Stores Ltd.
