Zambian coffee growers expect reduction in production

The Zambian Coffee Growers Association marketing manager, Joseph Taguma, has said they are expecting a 1,000 metric tones reduction of coffee production this year. In a recent interview, Taguma said that the harvest had been affected by the drought Zambia experienced during the last farming season.

"In the previous harvest period, we produced about 6,200 metric tonnes of coffee but there has been a reduction in this year's yield," he said. "We are now expecting to produce about 5,200 metric tonnes of coffee this year."

"Despite the reduction in production, we are expecting a good price for our coffee because it is of high quality." However, he said production would increase this year due to good rainfall.

This means that Zambia is likely to earn more from coffee exports than the US$12.5 million that the Coffee Board of Zambia had estimated. CBZ secretary Benny Zimba, added that improving international prices meant coffee could become one of Zambia's leading non exports (NTEs) in the near future.
