Fake condoms and cigarettes seized in Operation Street Pride

NEWHAM COUNCIL is warning consumers to be vigilant after a number of counterfeit condoms and cigarettes were seized during Romford Road Pride.

Trading standards officers confiscated 375 packets of fake condoms during the sixth Operation Street Pride. The team also worked with officers from HM Revenue and Customs as they seized 8,400 packets of illegal cigarettes The 1,125 individual condoms offer little protection against Sexual Transmitted Infections (STIs) or pregnancy.

They are being sold for around £1 per pack of three, though they usually retail at £2.49.

Councillor Clive Furness, executive member for health said: “Counterfeit condoms may not be manufactured to the appropriate standards and offer minimal protection to users. These condoms could put responsible people in danger of catching STIs, including HIV, as well as increasing the possibility of pregnancy.

“Illegal cigarettes retail at much lower prices and contain chemicals that are much more harmful to the user’s health than genuine cigarettes.”

The affected batches of condoms are:

Arouser: serial number 20906043
Ribbed: serial number 20905271/ 20904142/ 2991118
Performa: serial number TGL 4142
Gossamer: serial number 21405074
Select: serial number P4379
Fetherlite: serial number 21405074

Councillor Furness added: “This worrying discovery demonstrates the human cost of counterfeiting. It shows that counterfeiters are ruthless, show contempt for our health and wellbeing and are at work in a whole range of areas.”
