BY MILLICENT KWAPONG (MANAGING DIRECTOR OF AFRICAN ECHO) |
Millicent Kwapong: Dr Rose you are welcome to the African Echo newpaper offices. You are the first political figure to have visited us.
Dr.Rose: I am very honoured to be here.
|
M.K:
Dr. tell me, what is your position in the conservative party and what are your responsibilities?
DR: I am the deputy Chairman of the conservative party in Newham. Well among other things I am incharge of creating political awareness among ethnic minorities in the community and that is what brings me to your publishing house today. |
Dr.
Rose with Millicent |
M.K. What made you go into politics?
DR: After many years teaching in the university among other things I was convicted by a message in the Bible, precisely Genesis chapter 1, Vrs 25-26, when God says Let us make man in our own image. If I was created in the image of God then I should be part of the decision making process. I should reflect God by serving my community. Again God said to man to have dominion over everything and so as such I should be the head and not the tail. I have decided to do the will of God by using the experiences and the grace He has endowed me to help other people experience the freedom and peace I now enjoy. M.K: As a black African woman, how do you fit in the whole political process here?
DR: It has not been easy, but there are a lot of opportunities around us that not many women and especially africans take use of. I want to encourage more women and africans to enter into local and community level politics. When the people you associate with realise there is something good in you, you will rise above all the barriers of prejudice.
As a mother, when you enter into politics you rise quickly because most of the issues are basic problems you already have solutions to at home.Yourcolleagues will recognise you as such and your intergrity will push you through.
MK: Dr Rose, in the past most Africans did not get involved in British politics so what do you hope to achieve for your Party and the ethnic minority groups? DR:
We were in the past led to believe that it was wrong to belong to political parties. We were told politics was dirty and so most of us just sat and looked for decisions to be made for us. We sat home for the dirty politicians to made descisions for us. It is time for the clean politicians to come on board and that is what my new party Leader David Cameron has been preaching. A new type of politics.
M.K I was in one of your meetings recently it was very informative and I feel more should be organised, how can you convince especially the ethnic minorities to attend this meetings,
DR: My sister, I have come here today to use your medium to reach the many African readers of this paper. I want to first tell my people to register to vote. Get your name on the electoral register. It is very important. For your vote represents your freedom. That is your voice. I also will ask as many Africans to volunteer themselves for elections. Stand to be voted for. Get involved in the political making process.
M.K: Can you elaborate your policies, which will benefit ethnic minorities?
DR: The conservative party of which I belong represents many of the values as Africans we are familiar with. The family is the bedrock of society and we believe that is very important in our setting today. We want to empower families to take proper care of their children. We want to bring all sections of the society at par with each other. We want Africans in the U.K to feel proud of being who they are yet significant members of society. M.K:
Is the conservative party a rich and white man's party?
DR: I must admit it used to be so because we did not want to have anything to do with politics. It is not so today, how could I become a deputy chairman if that was the case.
M.K: Where in your policies do we see African values and beliefs?
DR: The conservative party represents family values which is important to the African family. Education is also very important to us and as the African proverb says it takes the whole village to train up a child, we beleive it takes the whole community to train up a child.
|
M.K:It looks to me that parties try to convince the minorities for support but when they are elected then it is a whole different ball game isn't it?
DR:Yes it very much happens. That is why I am encouraging many of us to stand to be elected into policy making positions. When you are there you will not have to depend on anyone to do it for you. You will do it yourself. |
 |
MK. Rose, How would minority owned business gain from a conservative led government.?
DR. We will seek to creatE a clean and fair system to benefit all. We will offer mechanisms to assist businesses in training and management systems.
MK:What is your personal message to our readers?
DR: I want to wish the entire readership a very pleasant new year. This is the year of achieving each others destiny. It is your year of reaching your goals. It is a year of only achievements. My prayer is for God to answer each others wishes this year.
MK: Thanks for your visit:
DR. I am honoured to be here.
