Report highlights rise in Angola's cassava production

Angola has now become one of the biggest producers of cassava within the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) in the 2006-2007 production period.

The information is contained in a document adopted in Maseru by the organisation's Council of Ministers. The report which focuses on the general situation of food security in the southern region of the continent, underlines that the production of cassava for 2006/2007 is estimated at 22.03 tons within five countries, Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia.

Based on some projections, the report estimates that Angola is likely to need some humanitarian assistance, due largely to its shortage of cereal for the 2006/2207 period.

Angola’s production is estimated at 1,514 tons, against the 696 tons the country is expected to produce. The data mentions that although Angola does well in the production of cassava, it has deficits in cereals like maize, rice and wheat. And according to the report, the 22 million tons of cassava expected for 2006/2007 in SADC represent 19 percent above the figure of the previous year which was of 18.47 million tons.
