ITV1’s coverage of the concert celebrating the 90th birthday of former South African president Nelson Mandela was watched by 3.8 million viewers on Friday night, June 27. Nelson Mandela: ‘Happy 90th Birthday’, which featured an array of artists, including Annie Lennox and Leona Lewis performing in London’s Hyde Park, averaged 18% of the available audience between 9pm and 11pm, according to unofficial overnights.
The Mandela concert beat BBC1’s offering in the 9pm hour, a repeat of last Christmas’ one-off return of 1970’s sitcom To the Manor Born, which was watched by 3.5 million viewers, a 16% share. BBC1’s 10pm news pulled in 3.6 million and a 17% share over 35 minutes, followed by Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, which averaged 4 million viewers and a 35% share over the hour from 10.35pm.
On Channel 4, the Big Brother live eviction show featured highlights of the previous night’s drunken row that led to Dennis McHugh being removed from the house on Friday and saw Sylvia Barrie being voted off the show.
An average of 3.8 million viewers tuned in during the 9pm hour. A further 199,000 watched on catch-up service Channel 4+1 an hour later. Sandwiched between Channel 4’s Big Brother slots, 8 out of 10 Cats was watched by 2.5 million viewers between 10pm and 10.35pm. A further 171,000 watched on Channel 4+1. The post-eviction interview between Barrie and Davina McCall pulled in 2.5 million viewers and a 14% audience share between 10.35pm and 11.10pm.
An additional 196,000 watched on Channel 4+1. On BBC2, a repeat of the previous Sunday’s edition of Top Gear averaged 2.2 million and a 10% share in the 9pm hour. A repeat of panel show QI followed in the half-hour from 10pm with 2.3 million viewers, with Newsnight averaging 1.1 million between 10.30pm and 11pm. On Channel Five, US import NCIS averaged 1.4 million in the 9pm hour, one million.
Later in the evening, BBC2’s live coverage of the Glastonbury festival featured performances from US rockers The Kings of Leon and Jamaican singer Jimmy Cliff. An average of 500,000 viewers watched between 11pm and 2am, with Glastonbury Live making BBC2 the least watched terrestrial channel in the 11pm hour. A repeat of Gordon Ramsay show The F Word on Channel 4 between 11pm and 12.15am was watched by 600,000 viewers, a share of 6%.
A further 85,000 watched on Channel 4+1. ITV1’s Late News pulled in 1.7 million between 11pm and 11.45pm, followed by Jeff Goldblum drama Raines which was watched by 700,000 viewers and a 10% share between 11.45pm and 12.35am. BBC1’s terrestrial premiere of the Agnes Bruckner horror film Venom was watched by 900,000 viewers between 11.40pm and 1.05am. Law & Order on Five pulled in 600,000 viewers, a 5% share in the 11pm hour. |
