Newham Council employees who completed a training programme to boost their English, maths and IT skills were recognised for their achievements at a presentation held at the Town Hall in East Ham.
Staff received their Skills for Life certificates during Learning at Work Day on June 7.
The scheme is part of the Local Government GO (Get On) Award, which Newham Council has signed up to, and which commits the local authority to providing its workforce with Skills for Life learning opportunities.
Making the presentations were deputy mayor, Councillor Christine Bowden, chief executive Dave Burbage, and Unison’s lifelong learning co-ordinator Oreleo DuCran. During Learning at Work Day, staff took part in taster sessions on topics such as sign language and improving communications skills, as well as playing the drums to relieve stress.
Cllr Bowden said: “Congratulations to everyone who achieved their Skills for Life certificates. I am delighted that council employees are taking the opportunity to further their education.
“We want all staff to know that there are no barriers to increasing their skills and knowledge and furthering their own personal and career aspirations, while at the same time, support the drive for high quality services for the local community. “Learning is infectious and we hope that council employees will start a ripple effect and encourage their friends and family to follow suit.”
Chief executive Dave Burbage said: “All the staff who took part in the Skills for Life training have done extremely well. I hope that this has inspired them to continue with their education.
“I have first hand experience of learning at work – I began my local government career when I was 16 and I did much of my learning with my employers. “There is a lot of talent in Newham and we want everyone to have the opportunity for career progression.”
