Overseas Teacher Working Group Launched
By Guy Mulvane
On Saturday December 2, the Overseas Trained Teachers Working Group (OTTWG) was launched at the Institute of Education, University of London.
The concept emerged out of a shared concern over the status, position and treatment of teachers from Commonwealth countries and European Accession states -the paucity of data on teacher migration patterns- career development prospects of overseas trained teachers [OTT] and the issues surrounding initial induction and support.
The group determined that its remit would include research and dissemination of information concerning teachers of the Commonwealth and European Accession states.

They will engage in research in the following areas: teacher qualifications comparisons and equivalency; induction and support programmes; wages and salaries; career development opportunities; conduct of head teachers, local authorities and teacher recruitment agencies in the recruitment process; migratory patterns of OTT’s; the impact of the Commonwealth Teacher Recruitment Protocol (CTRP) and the education prospects and life chances of children of overseas teachers in the UK. |
Dr Miller, a co-convenor of the group and an educational policy expert from the University of London voiced his concerns by stating “overseas teachers contribute significantly to the enrichment and advancement of education in England. However, not enough attention is paid to their integration and well being.”
The co-convenors believe that their work is integral to understanding of the matter of teacher recruitment, migration and integration.
