GOVERNMENT PROMOTES DEMOCRACY IN TANZANIA
In a move to strengthen relationships and share good practice with policy makers in Africa, Constitutional Affairs Minister, Harriet Harman MP, has began a visit to Tanzania. The visit takes place against the backdrop of the Commission for Africa’s recent report containing recommendations on how to improve governance, democracy and security, and create the right conditions for growth and investment in Africa.

Harriet Harman said: “The Government is committed to promoting development and reducing poverty in Africa. In its final report the Commission for Africa identified good
governance as being key to the foundation of development. States need to be able to build a culture of human rights, deliver public services and promote a climate of productivity and growth, before reforms in other areas will be effective.
Only by listening to and establishing a dialogue with the people of Africa has the Commission been able to get to grips with the issues and make concrete
recommendations on how to support the changes that will reduce poverty. I hope my visit will go some way towards maintaining and building on that dialogue.” |
During the course of her visit, Ms Harman will meet Government leaders and public servants in the Iringa region of Tanzania and senior representatives of the British Council. She will visit a District Judge and Law Centre, local schools, a student partnership project and the Iringa Women’s Legal Aid Centre.
