Egypt overtakes Pakistan as top Kenyan tea importer

Egypt has overtaken Pakistan as the key export market for Kenyan tea, says the Tea Board of Kenya. The board also says that tea prices have improved quite dramatically this year due largely to an increased demand in the global market.

The export unit price in July has increased from Sh120 per kilogramme last year to Sh164 now. But the board's managing director, Mrs Sicily Kariuki, said that export volume has declined by 16 per cent compared to a similar period last year.

"This has been due to the drought in the first-quarter of the year," she says. She said that 29.5 million kgs worth Sh4.8 billion were exported in July compared to 35.5 million kgs valued at Sh4.2 billion recorded the same month last year.

Egypt, who have always been one of the top importers, bought more than Pakistan over this annual cycle. Pakistan had been the key market for many years, and have imported 28 per cent of the commodity last year alone.
