Greenwich Borough deepens bond with Meridian city of Tema in Ghana
A delegation from the borough of Greenwich led by Cllr John Fahy, who helped set up a twinning link between Tema and Greenwich during his mayoral year in 2000 recently visited to deepen the bonds of friendship amongst the two partners Cllr Fahy and his team met government ministers as well as members of the Tema Assembly to discuss future initiatives to create new opportunities for the people of Tema.
Already there are moves to create more links between schools in Greenwich and Tema, including the shipping of books and computers. Cllr Fahy said: “The trip was a great success. It is clear that the twinning link is valued in Tema and a number of key points for future development were discussed.
“Football is a great way of bringing people together in Africa and Charlton Athletic very kindly supplied football kits for primary schools in Tema. The town stadium would be ideal for a learning centre combined with a football academy and we visited the well-established Tom Vernon Academy to move this project forward.”
Signage across the harbour at Tema - including Greenwich House and Greenwich Depot - proclaims the link with the London borough. The delegation arrived with gifts and letters from Greenwich schools already linked to the West African country.
Cllr Fahy said: “It is only when you are in Africa that you can appreciate how important it is to encourage greater efforts in Greenwich and across the UK to help those living in the most deprived circumstances to build a better brighter future.
“We were welcomed with warmth everywhere we went. I was a little surprised but delighted by how many people were aware of the link with Greenwich. Our programme ranged from a farmers' day, old people's day and visits to a cocoa plantation, school and a technical college.
The government officials we met took a keen interest in Greenwich's role as a host borough for the 2012 Olympics.”
