The
Battle Of The Johns...
The
forth-coming sixth Ghanaian general election in
December this year since the nation’s independence,
obviously sends the political spot-light on the
African continent to the peaceful West African country
of
Ghana
.
It
is indeed the hottest political but most peaceful land
in
Africa
if not the whole of the globe this moment.
Ghana
has come of age. At the age of 47, democracy is now
properly and systematically gaining root. For the
first time in several years, a democratically elected
government handed over to another democratically
elected government. Again for the first time, a
democratically elected government, taken over from a
democratic elected government, would be serving its
full four-year-term in office. A laudable political
and democratic achievement.
Last
week saw the real start of yet another race by four
political leaders to
Ghana
’s
Downing
Street
– The Castle.
They
include the leader of the Grand Coalition –
comprising some political parties with their roots and
ideologies from the First President of the country,
Dr. Osagyefour Kwame Nkrumah, Dr. Edward Mahama,
George Opesika Agudey of the Convention People’s
Party (CPP), the former vice president of the republic
and the flag bearer of the largest opposition party,
the National Democratic Congress, Professor John Evans
Atta Mills and the incumbent, President John Agyekum
Kufuor.
Certainly
and like the previous elections the race would be
principally between the two Johns. John Agyekum Kufuor
and John Evans Atta Mills. Indications from all
surveys are that, one of the Johns will be sworn into
office as the President of Ghana, come January 2005.
That will mean that John Kufuor who took over from yet
another John (Rawlings) will either hand over to
himself as John or to John Mills.
