Beckham’s UN Assignment
It has been announced that David Beckham is to become a UN goodwill ambassador - and his first mission will be to help children in Africa.
The England skipper has been personally chosen to represent the UN by Secretary General Kofi Annan.
Beckham, 29, was said to be “thrilled and honoured” to accept the prestigious title - and hopes to help millions of children around the world.
Kofi Annan selected Beckham because he is seen as an inspirational role model to young people.
His duties will include helping poverty-stricken children across the globe get into sport.
David Beckham currently plays for Real Madrid in Spain and has denied rumours that he would retire from international football after the 2006 World Cup in Germany. He intends to hit a more than a century appearances for the English national team before thinking of retirement. “I set a target for myself when I got into the team and when I was given the captaincy and that was to reach the records of Bobby Charlton and Bobby Moore, both of which were idols of me and my dad.”
