Ghana's Black Stars Ready To Banish Barreto Image

Black Stars Captain Stephen Appiah says they are determined to win all three points for
Ghana against Congo DR despite the disappointment of the players at coach Mariano Barreto’s departure.

Appiah told JoyFM Sports, in
Accra , in an exclusive interview that members of the team have resolved to play for the nation and keep the 2006 world cup dream on course.

He said: “I have spoken to the guys and everyone says, ‘okay we liked Barreto and we are sad that he is gone. But he is a foreigner and if we do well, it is us who will take the credit’. So we are not going to let his departure affect us. We want all three points on Sunday and we are going to show that”.

Appiah who will be returning to the team after missing out on the last game due to injury says it is imperative that the Stars win Sunday’s game against DR Congo who are in second place behind
Ghana on goal difference with both sides perked at seven points.

“We want a firm grip on the group so we must win. It will give us an advantage and boost our confidence. And because this is a home game, we can’t afford to drop points.”

Ghana ’s last match was labelled a boring affair by many even though the Stars ran away 2-0 winners over Cape Verde . Appiah says he will settle for another boring display if only that will earn Ghana the three points. “We know what we want and that is three points. I saw the Cape Verde game and even though it wasn’t pretty, it helped us greatly. We want to win on Sunday not to play fine, fine football.”

The Congolese are due in town on Friday for the match without former
Newcastle striker Lumano Lua Lua but they will have AS Monaco striker Shabani Nomda. For many experts and Appiah, he is a player Ghana must watch.

“Nomda is a great forward. He works tirelessly so we have to watch him. But we have Samuel Osei Kufuor and John Mensah who are two solid defenders so I have no fears.”
