Two Africans Named In FIFA Best List
Two
African footballers plying their trade in
Europe
have been named in the FIFA-released list of 30
players contesting for the World Best Footballer for
2004.
Barcelona
striker and Cameroonian International Samuel Eto'o
Fils and
Chelsea
marksman and Ivorian International Didier Drogba are
the only players listed in the field of European and
South American-dominated list.
Samuel
Eto'o, the reigning African Footballer of the Year was
transferred from Maruocar to
Barcelona
this season at a fee of $ 24 million having scored 54
league goals while at Maruocar and already has banged
in six goals.
Samuel
Eto'o only managed a goal at CAN 2004, one of his
disappointing outings at the African soccer festival
but his output at club level can only be described as
classic.
Ivorian
International Didier Drogba cost London-based Club
Chelsea a whopping $ 44million before then, he plied
his trade for French-based Club Marseilles, scored 18
goals in the league for the French club and eight (8)
goals in the European Champions league to propel the
club to the grand finale of the UEFA league.
Drogba
who placed second to Samuel Eto'o for the African
Footballer of the Year 2004 has scored three goals in
the Barclays Premiership for
Chelsea
and three champions league goals.
Didier
Drogba for now is the highest-bought African player in
history.
Both
players have proven their worth but would have to
fight hard to occupy a respectable position at the end
of assessment as regulars like David Beckham, Rolando,
Zidan, Figo, Rolandiho, Ballack, Roberto Carlos among
new contenders such as Rooney of Manchester United
could prove too difficult to beat.
