Man jailed for rape committed 16 years ago
 |
The sentence follows the re-investigation of the case by the Cold Case Rape Investigation Team.
On 16/12/89 the victim attended a party in Brixton with her boyfriend. Her boyfriend left the party following an argument and she walked home with two friends.
On the way the group saw another house party taking place in Plato Road, SW4. After entering the party she became separated from her friends and went to leave but was dragged to the ground and her handbag was stolen. |
After getting up, a man offered to help her get her bag back. She followed him to his car and they began to drive around the area. The man then drove into a quiet residential street and parked.
He then climbed into the back seat and raped her. After he had stopped she fled the car and he drove off. The victim flagged down a passing vehicle and was taken to her boyfriend's house where she called police.
Forensic samples were taken at the time but no match was made until 2005 when the samples were re-submitted and thanks to advances in DNA technology a match was made by the DNA database to Wallace.
Peter Wallace was arrested and charged with rape on 22/11/05.
DC Jenny Butler, officer in charge of the case, said: "Wallace must have thought he had got away with this horrendous crime after many years without getting caught.
"This case shows that we are determined to bring rapists to justice no matter how long ago their crimes were committed. I hope the conviction and sentencing of Wallace encourages victims of sexual violence to come forward and serves as a warning to any who may commit.

Peter Buahin Murder Anniversary Appeal
 |
The Police making a fresh appeal for witnesses and information after the murder of 24-year-old Peter Buahin on the first anniversary of his death.
He was shot at approx 23:49 on 25.07.05 whilst sat astride a pedal cycle in Woodpecker Rd, SE14.
London Ambulance Service attended, but due to the severity of Peter's injuries he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Earlier in the evening a number of youths, also on pedal cycles, had been seen in the vicinity and disappeared following the shooting, abandoning their cycles at the scene. |
Leading the investigation, Detective Inspector Geoff Whitehouse, Operation Trident said:
"Somebody somewhere knows who killed Peter, and whilst 12-months may have passed since his death we still need the communities assistance in bringing those responsible to justice. We are appealing to them to stop shielding his killer(s), and instead ask that they think about Peter's family who understandably are still devastated by their son's
death and need answers as to why this has happened.
"Those responsible for taking Peter's life are undoubtedly dangerous individuals and need to be caught. Anybody with information that they think may assist us, or those that may not have felt able to come forward before, are urged to call the incident room on 0208 247 4553 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
