NAMDEB makes history with its 2006 production
 |
NAMDEB, Namibia's largest producer of diamonds, recorded the highest level of production in the diamond-mining history of the country when it mined over two million carats last year. The 2.085m carats were recovered from its land and sea-based operations.
De Beers Marine, which is responsible for NAMDEB's sea operations, also achieved a record by mining more than a million carats for the first time in its existence.
"This is a remarkable achievement, coming at a time when Namdeb is reassessing its operations to confront the issue of declining land reserves as well as grappling with the challenges of mining in increasing difficult areas," Nickey Oppenheimer, chairman of the Namdeb board of directors, said in the company's 2006 Annual Review. |
In Namibia, diamonds account for more than 40% of the country's export revenue and 7% of the Government's tax income. Apart from the record-setting production year, NAMDEB also points to the conclusion of its sales agreement with the Namibian Government as another milestone.
