Kenya Airways unveils plans to boost its market share

Kenya Airways has recently announced a new plan to increase its market share in Africa. The new plan will include massive route expansion, and the acquisition of five more aircrafts within the next twelve months that are to be deployed on new routes.

The airline’s Chief Executive, Titus Naikuni, said that Kenya’s national carrier would take delivery of four Boeing 737-800 aircraft between October and December to replace their Boeing 737-200 planes.

Plans are being made for the new planes to be deployed on local and regional routes. Currently, Kenya Airways boasts a fleet of 21 aircrafts. Under the planned route expansion, Kenya Airways will launch flights to Congo- Brazaville, Contonou and Paris in October.

Naikuni revealed that the airline was experiencing difficulties entering some markets in Africa due to protectionist policies.

"Our efforts to expand our network within Africa were sometimes met with frustrations. Some countries persistently postponed their proposal overtures to conclude new or revised air transport agreements, while others declined KA’s plans to increase frequencies."

Kenya Airways is currently ridding on a strong profitability wave driven by continuing growth in passenger numbers on new and existing routes, whilst at the same time maintaining tight control on costs. Yet, though optimistic for the future, the company has expressed caution over the unprecedented increase in fuel prices and the increased competition, especially from Middle East carriers.
