ANGLOGOLD DRAWS ATTENTION TO ILLEGAL MINING IN GHANA

SOUTH AFRICA'S largest gold producer, AngloGold Ashanti, says that small scale and illegal mining around its African operations is proving to be a big challenge, often involving unsafe and environmentally dangerous mining practices.

Writing in AngloGold Ashanti 's 2006 annual report, which was recently released, CEO Bobby Godsell said that this type of mining was one of the biggest socio-economic issues that the company now have to deal with.

He noted that small scale, informal and illegal miners were often operating outside the laws that seek to regulate mining and, thus, ensure benefits for the broader community. This is a material issue at the company's operations in Ghana, Guinea, Tanzania and, to a lesser extent, Mali, as well as the exploration sites in Colombia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Godsell noted, however, that small-scale mining was providing a form of economic activity for individuals who had not found a place in the formal economy.
