CHINESE COMPANY TO MAKE TRACTORS IN UGANDA

A CHINESE firm is planning to set up a multi-billion dollar tractor factory in Uganda, according to the investment state minister.

Prof. Semakula Kiwanuka said that Changjiang Agricultural Machinery would manufacture between 15,000 and 20,000 tractors annually. "The firm is asking the Government to guarantee the purchase of at least 5,000 tractors annually," he said.

The minister added that this was a timely investment, especially in Uganda's quest to transform agriculture from subsistence to market-oriented production.

Kiwanuka said that without agricultural mechanisation, Uganda could not modernise the sector and increase production.

"Our biggest constraint at the moment is on the supply side. We are just not producing enough for exports and for industrial processing," he said.
