|
The managements of four major rice importing companies in Monrovia have urged the Liberian government to encourage a free and open market system for all commodities, especially the nation's stable food, rice.
The managements said that a free and open market economy would help to reduce prices which in turn, would ease the suffering of the consuming public. They made the call when they appeared before a Senate Committee on Commerce and Industry at the National Legislature in Monrovia. The companies include the Foulton Corporation, Fouani Brothers Corporation, K&K Corporation and the Bridgeway Corporation.
The Operational Manager of the Foulton Corporation, Mr. Umaru Barry, who pleaded for the open market, denied participating in any bidding process at the Commerce Ministry.

The Operational Manager of K&K Corporation, Vezeliba B. Banna, also denied being a candidate in the controversial bidding process at the Commerce Ministry and pledged his company's readiness to cooperate fully, with the government to resolve the current rice row.
Meanwhile, the four managements have agreed to share their weekly reports on the sale of rice with the Senate committee to help with any ongoing investigation.
