Kenya has best investment infrastructure, says World Bank

KENYA has the best infrastructure for setting up businesses compared to Uganda and Tanzania, a World Bank survey has said.
However, it did note that it takes much longer than in the two other States to install a telephone line which is crucial to every business.
"Installing a telephone for horticultural investors took three months in Kenya compared to Uganda where it took just one week," said the report. But investors in Kenya, did experience less power outages. The Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (Miga) Snapshot Africa 2006 report says Uganda had the most outages which dramatically affected the food and beverage industries. |
Tanzania was the worst hit by water shortages, with 237 'dry' days in the sector. And Uganda emerged as the cheapest place to build a commercial property, with office buildings coming in at half the cost of those in Tanzania and hotels at less than a third of the cost in Kenya.
With the exception of warehouse, the study says construction costs are highest in Kenya. In the food and beverage processing industry, the gap between management and unskilled workers' salaries was greatest in Uganda, where managers earn 20 times more. In Kenya they earn eight times higher.
