SMALL FIRMS URGE ROAD TOLL RETHINK

The Federation of Small Businesses is calling for the Government's plans for road charging to be put to the vote before they are implemented.

Speaking after the Government launched a draft Bill to allow local authorities to introduce pilot road charging schemes ahead of a national programme of road tolls, FSB regional chairman Tony Cherry called for referendums to approve any proposals.

"Road taxes already raise £45 billion per year for the Treasury but only £7 billion is reinvested in the roads. Motorists are already being shortchanged and more road capacity is needed," he said. "If all cars that had out of date tax or MOT certificates were taken off the roads, congestion would be drastically reduced.

Instead of creating more tolls and more laws the Government should be enforcing current rules and spending more on the transport network. Road tolls could prove to be a huge knock to the British economy and cost many jobs."
