Ghana discovers large offshore oil fields

THE CHIEF Executive Officer of Kosmos, has recently announced that the company has made a substantial and significant oil discovery at the Mahogany Number One, in water depths of 1,320 meters (4,330 feet).

“We are extremely optimistic of where this is going to lead Ghana, and certainly our country is moving forward. We obviously have a lot more work to do, this discovery is just the tip of the iceberg and we’ve get a lot more to do before we can give you specific details,” he said.

President Kufuor, in his remarks to the nation, said that his confidence has been strengthened with this discovery, made in significant proportions.

He likens Ghana’s present situation to what has been found in Nigeria and Angola.

The president talked about the impact of the discovery to the Ghanaian economy, especially at this moment when the country is going through an energy crisis. But Ghana has at long last, discovered what is likely to be large quantities of oil. The President pledged the government’s continued support for the project and advised the company to be careful in its operations.
