Botswana pushing for more Indian investors

President Festus Mogae's visit to India will go a long way towards benefiting Uganda. Like China, India is one of the world's emerging markets and is home to a billion people, making it an obvious attraction for the rest of the world.

India has had fair successes in the area of medicine and technology, and the country's doctors and IT specialists are strewn all over the world because of their expertise. But for countries such as Botswana, with a very small manufacturing base, India is important in a number of ways.

On his trip, President Mogae visited tannery and leather works, and since there is a huge production of leather in Botswana, the Indian visit could open doors that have remained locked for years. There is also the option of sending various skins and hides to India for processing.

Indian investors with experience in diamond processing could be wooed to set up here so that Botswana's diamond park could rival the best centres in the world.

Botswana's newly set up embassy in India should ensure that everything possible is done to attract Indian investors to Botswana.
