A Luton teacher flies out from Britain on Friday (Feb 1) on a goodwill mission to the West African state of Gambia.
Ailsa Harris, a history and health and social care teacher at Barnfield West Academy in Lewsey Farm, will be part of a team of teachers and education experts visiting .
“We will be visiting schools and other places such as a health clinic and a mosque. We will also be studying various aspects of Gambian life such as transport and the local market,” Ms Harris said.
Barnfield West Academy is a partner school of the University of Hertfordshire which is organising the trip as part of its global educational commitment.
The team comprises Ms Harris, four primary school teachers and staff from the university’s education and humanities department. Ms Harris, who taught in the country for four years, said: “I am hoping to establish a partnership link between a school in Gambia and the academy. We have much to offer each other.
“I shall also be taking a lot of photographs and a video for the academy’s geography students. Gambia is the country they study in their tourism work. Tourism is very big in Gambia along the coastal strip.”
She said: “I know the country quite well, but it will be very interesting to see places I haven’t been toi before.”
Gambia, which has a per capita annual income of about £145, is a five-hour flight from Gatwick. James Island, on which stands an old slaving fort, is a UNESCO world heritage site.
