TRAGEDY HITS SOUTH AFRICAN MUSIC SCENE

South African singer Lebo Mathosa died in an accident east of Johannesburg in the early hours on Monday, her manager Linzy Cowley said. "Unfortunately, Lebo was killed in a car accident in the early hours of this morning," she told Sapa.

"We send our condolences to her family and friends." Mathosa's driver apparently lost control of the Toyota Prado they were travelling in on the N3 highway on the East Rand. The vehicle overturned between the Heidelberg Road off-ramp Grey Avenue in Germiston, Ekurhuleni metro police Kobeli Mokheseng said. The cause of the accident was unknown.

A case of culpable homicide was being investigated. The rhythm and blues and Kwaito singer died at the scene. But Lebo lay dying... she was dead before an ambulance could even take her to hospital.

She lay in a pool of her own blood only a few metres from the wreck of the car in which she had been returning home after a party thrown on Sunday night by Bondo Ntuli, a station manager at Yfm.

Tow truck driver Karrin Aarons was on the scene as Lebo's life drifted away. It happened just after midnight at the N3 highway near Vosloorus. Inspector George Mokheseng of the Ekurhuleni Metro cops confirmed there were no skid marks.

"When we got there the driver was still in a state of shock. He could not say anything." Police cannot identify the driver of the death car while their investigations are continuing. The driver suffered minor injuries, and was treated for shock. Cowley said she would meet the Mathosa family on Monday and a statement would be issued later.

"She had numerous internal injuries, said Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metro Police. A friend of Lebo, Pinky Dadu, also came on the scene shortly afterwards. She and Lebo had been at the same party. Pinky sobbed: "We have known each other for the past ten years... it is too sad to lose her like this."

Alberton Police say they have opened a case of culpable homicide against the driver. Mathosa shot to fame in 1994 as a member of kwaito group Boom Shaka. She released her first solo album in 2000.
