The United States has warned in strongest terms yet that any attempt at tenure extension by President Olusegun Obasanjo, "could lead to political strife and eventual break up of the country."
This grim warning was made by U.S. Director of National Intelligence, John Negroponte, when he testified before the US Senate Committee on Intelligence.
Negroponte was throwing more light on the U.S. "Annual Threat Assessment," conducted by his office.

Chaka Chaka’s niece dies in hotel room

The voice of one of South Africa's greatest R&B divas has fallen silent. The body of Tsakini "TK" Mhinga, 27, was found on in a hotel room at the City Lodge in Bryanston, Johannesburg.
Captain Schalk Bornman said staff at the hotel found Mhinga about 13:30 after she did not answer knocking at her door or phone calls to her room.

Mayor of Newham Urges Migrant Communities To Learn English

The mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales says English language is indispensable for effective integration into the British society. Speaking recently during a “question time event” at the Stratford Old Town Hall, he advised residents mostly from the ethnic minority communities to improve their English language skills in order to enhance their chances of benefiting from opportunities provided by the borough and the UK public at large.

Parliament Empowers Ethnic Media

The first ever UK ethnic trade body, Multi Ethnic Media Owners Association, MEMOA, was launched in Parliament last week to support multi ethnic media owners from the Afro-Caribbean, African, Asian and Turkish communities.
The meeting was hosted by David Lammy MP at a House of Commons reception, sponsored by Urban Market Consultancy of the Glen Yearwood Group,

Kenyan
boy in treatment bid dies

Freddie was born severely disabled but the cause is not known
A disabled Kenyan boy whose parents campaigned to have him treated in the UK has died, a charity has said.
One-year-old Freddie Musena-Mtile, born without arms or legs, died in his home town of Malindi from a fungal infection, Thalidomide UK said.
His adoptive English mother and Kenyan father had campaigned with the charity to get a UK visa for Freddie.

Uganda's
Besigye cleared of rape

Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye has been found not guilty of rape by a court in the capital, Kampala. The judge said the prosecution had been "crude and amateurish". Dr Besigye has always said the charges against him were politically motivated. He still faces treason charges in the high court, while the army wants to try him on terrorism and weapons charges.
Dr Besigye's lawyers are due to challenge his recent election defeat to President Yoweri Museveni in court.

bank establishes catalyst growth fund for Africa

The World Bank has approved creation of The Africa Catalytic Growth Fund (ACGF) to provide targeted financial support to accelerate shared economic growth and to assist
in the achievement of Millennium Development Goals that have proved difficult to attain by countries in the continent. The fund will be generated by the World Bank Group’s Africa Action Plan to Support African Countries, approved last September, which sets out a framework for supporting development results on the Continent.
