A GROUP of Young people have attended a graduation ceremony at the West Reservoir in Green Lanes Hackney, to celebrate the hard work and determination that they displayed whilst participating in a cycle maintenance project over the summer holidays.
Officers from Chatham Safer neighbourhood team, Hackney community Safety Unit and Hackney Council - Transport Planner devised "Repair"; a series of bike maintenance courses aimed at breaking down geographical youth affiliations and promoting civic engagement.
Knowing that providing activities would divert youths from crime, the officers put together a bike-building course, using those that had been seized by police officers. Over the fourweek period young people aged between 12 to 16 carried out minor repairs to their cycles and learnt basic cycle maintenance skills.
During the ceremony the young people where presented with their bikes and a certificate of completion by Leroy Logan. Superintendent of Partnership at Hackney Borough police, and Counsellor Julius Nkafu, Chair of the Hackney Safety Communities Partnership.
There was also a surprise presentation of a cycle to Kerra Campbell aged seven, who was too young to attend the courses but displayed impeccable behaviour throughout.
After the formal ceremony the young people where further entertained by a BMX stunt man.
Superintendent Leroy Logan said: " This innovative cycle maintenance course is an excellent example of partnership working. By working closely with our strategic partners this scheme has helped to build bridges with the young people, whist bringing them together from across the Borough and easing existing tensions.
Chatham Safer Neighbourhood Team is very instrumental in devising youth engagement activates and this latest venture has provided young people with some very useful and relevant skills. Hackney is a very cyclefriendly borough so I have no doubt that the skills these young people learnt will be put to good use"
