A letter to my folks By Pearl Ashia

Dear folks,
How are y'all doing today? The sun is shine a couple of weeks ago. It is unfortunate we are going back to the real British weather. Temperatures soared and I believe you all got reminded of the warmth of Africa. But the one thing I missed so much is the typical hustle and bustle atmosphere of our towns and cities where you hear hawkers shouting pure water and other things.
Nevertheless I have something to smile about. I bought myself a nice bikini and got my self a bikini wax for my swimming sessions. Yes. That was really painful. I just wonder
why women go through so much trouble to get what they think men find attractive. I remember back home one of the attributes of a pretty woman was hairy legs but I discovered in the UK it isn't so. A woman's arms and legs have to be clean shaven and I totally agree with that. It leaves your skin very smooth and sexy. Twice in every week, I do shave my arms and legs guess what? It works magic on my boyfriend!
Anyway, let me tell you why I am writing before I bore you with bikini waxing. I find something quite intriguing. I was travelling on the bus 41 from Archway one Monday afternoon when i met a bunch of teenage girls on the bus. Apparently they were returning
from school. I always try to avoid the upper deck because i reckon these kids are loud and can be very rude. From the faces of each of these teenagers i could tell where they originated from. The Ghanaian or South African or Somalian kids can never hide.
Their facial features always give them away. As I listened to these girls chat, I asked myself where did the African values go? Have parents now forgotten who we are? Its a shame to hear these kids talk.
 |
They show no respect whatsoever. They are so loud and they won't even give up their seats for older persons when they are required. Are our African kids now so British that they don't uphold our values any more or is that parents do not bother to instill in them any proper African discipline? The irony is that the kids who are natives of this nation and i sure am referring to the English, the Welsh and the Irish kids comport themselves better than the Afro-British kids. Why?
|
I can only conclude that most African parents are failing to teach their kids the way they should go. Even the bible says spare the rod the spoil the child. Kids are wayward in this country because they are not disciplined. Their favourite catchphrases are: WHATEVER!
,WHAT ?, YOU ARE NOT MY MOTHER! or DONT TELL ME WHAT TO DO! and if you are not lucky they might use the F-word on you. What a shame!
Folks, we are still Africans even if we have been passed for British citizens. That's just paperwork. Instill in your kids the rich African cultural values which have been passed on from generations to
generations, teach them not only to understand our language but to speak as well. Give them proper names with meaning and quit naming them after things like Mercedes, Brandy, chardonnay, Apple, and what nots and nots. And most of all, take them on holidays to our continent and show them that we do not live on trees as they have been brainwashed and that we do belong to a beautiful place which has suffered and is still suffering from crooked leaders and the aftermath of oppression. Tell them about the Exodus. Teach them that one day we do want to see Africa transit from the-so called Third world to a First world and they have a role to play in that..
Folks, I am running out of space now . I will write to you again next week but until then, teach our kids the way they should go and when they are old they will not depart from it.
Pearl writes.
