Newham holds Refugees Day

More than 4,000 people turned up to a festival to celebrate Refugee Week on Saturday at Central Park, East Ham.

There were performances of music, dance and entertainment from around the world, including Kenyan tribal costumes, Latin American music, East African acrobats, Lithuanian singers and poetry recitals by young refugees.

Visitors took the opportunity to sample free food from a variety of cultures and there were stalls and children's activities, including bouncy castles and face painting. The festival was organised by the Newham Refugees and Migrant Forum and is supported by Newham Council and community forums to celebrate the positive contribution that refugee communities make to Newham and raise awareness of the issues affecting these communities.

Residents also had their say on life in the borough in the community forum’s interactive Video Qube. Cllr Neil Wilson, executive adviser on equalities, said: “As one of the most diverse communities in Britain, Newham has a lot to gain from the many different communities that have come to live within our borough. I am delighted to have participated in this Refugee Week celebration.”
